Day 3

HOT SHOWER!! That felt incredible. I got a decent nights sleep, I got a pretty good lunch from the outpost at the Boulton Creek Trading post so the day was starting out on the right foot. I was off to tackle Elk Pass and my first Continental Divide Crossing. The climb was hard up to 6400 feet, but wasn't terrible and it took about 1 hour and 45 minutes to cross the divide into British Columbia. I got some really amazing views and some good pictures coming down elk pass. I passed a little cabin that I was trying to get to the night before. It looked crazy cool, with a bunk bed, woodstove, and a sink. But I was just too tired to make it there. The day was going great. I was losing elevation, making pretty good time and at about mile 30 I stopped and had a bite to eat. I met two guys, Vic and Curtis, coming the other way from Montana. They had some pretty gnarly bikes with 29 inch wheels that were about 3 inches wide. I felt like I had a bit of a wussy bike after seeing theirs, but I had no intention of pushing that big tire. Takes too much effort. After my break the road seemed to get worse. It looked like it was an old logging road and after constantly dogging potholes I was starting to curse the road. Even though I was losing elevation I still had to go up and down the hills. At the bottom of every hill it seemed like there was a massive pothole. I was trying to keep my momentum going so I wouldn't have to work so hard, but those potholes seemed to keep getting in the way. By the time mile 45 rolled around I was pretty much beat. I was going to get to Elkford though. Elkford came about mile 54 and I caved in and got a hotel room. Even though I ended up at 4300 feet from 6400 feet that road was brutal and really took it out of me. Watching Canadian sportcenter was interesting though. Being Canada day on July 1 their top ten plays were the top Canadian athletes over the past year and Justin Morneau came in at number 6 for winning the Home Run derby.
